Vintage Collectibles: T2 Limited Edition Laserdisc Box Set 1991

I'm not really a videophile, and I don't even own a laserdisc player, but I do like to won laserdisc editions for two reasons. One, it's a time capsule - it's an interesting and cool totem from the time when the movie was fresh. It's a representation of the time. Two - laserdiscs are like vinyl records - the artwork just looks so damn cool in a large format. Many people collect vinyls without even having a record player, simply because vinyls, like laserdiscs, are a piece of artwork in themselves. As with albums, lots of work went into design of those things, and they look so good in person. The large size works great and its like a small canvas, and you can't really tell how cool it is unless you're holding it in front of you.

The most known laserdisc release for Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the stunning Special Edition box set (showcased HERE), but the box set that preceded it was also a fantastic piece. The first T2 laserdisc box set was a second box set release of the film, and it consisted of a chocolate box type of a packaging, which was all T2 logo. The whole thing has a look of a steel plate with the large, shining, engraved T2 logo which was so prominent at the time (A bit more on it HERE). It looks beautiful in that size, and I love the simplicity and the idea of just having a symbol on it. Same idea worked so well  shortly before with Batman and few years later for Jurassic Park.

The set contained the theatrical film and the Making Of featurette, which run on tv and was featured in few VHS releases worldwide. The whole thing was limited to 2,000 copies but they're pretty widely available nowadays. It also contains a booklet which is mostly a reprint of the artwork for the standard edition laserdisc, plus a page on T2's special effects and the Making Of documentary. It also has a letter to the fans from James Cameron

If you're looking to find out more about the content of the laserdisc, the look of the film itself on it, either you can read about it a bit HERE or you can watch an excellent feature on Home Video releases HERE.
