I remember first watching/reading the text commentary on T2 Extreme DVD when it came out in 2003, and being absolutely blown away by the artistic side of T2 I havent focused on before. Particularly, the deliberate lighting of the T-800 during the Hasta La Vista scene - that the mechanical side was lit in blue and darkened by shadow and the human side was lit with warm orange, symbolizing the triumph of his humanity. Vintage Magazine Collection: Japanese Starlog #79, May 1985

Japanese magazines were always the absolute best when it comes to magazines and books. They blew away any other publications. Their graphic design, layouts and most importantly, photos never seen in other publications and screencaps from the actual films were, at the time, something very special and rare. I mean, their 1985 book on The Terminator is just unbelievable. The excellent Starlog magazine was also published in Japan, but it wasn't simply a translation of the American counterpart. They were completely different issues with different articles, content and photos. The May 1985 issue featured The Terminator on the front and back cover, and featured 8 pages dedicated to the special effects of the film. All About The Design of the Terminator's CPU

As everything in James Cameron's movies, even such seemingly trivial items like the Terminator chip had a lot of thought put behind it, and few designers to come up with the finished look. The basis for its look was in real life science, and Cameron wanted someone who was actually in the field of neural networking to consult the design. That someone was Larry Yaeger, principal engineer in Apple programs, whose background includes computational fluid dynamics, computer graphic imaging and, most importantly - neural network research. Yaeger himself wrote an essay on multiple subjects for 2000's Terminator 2: Judgment Day Ultimate DVD release, and since this DVD and its vast majority of its material has been out of print for decades, I may show some excerpts from Yaeger's writing, which is so interesting it would have been a pity if it got lost in time buried in DVD extras that were never rereleased on other formats.
