Vintage Magazine Collection: Film Magazine September 1991

Terminator 2: Judgment Day graced covers of all kinds of magazines in the UK once it premiered in August there, as it did in US since June. UK's Film magazine was, as you might have guessed, a magazine dedicated to all the movies that were in theaters at the time, and they gave T2 a nice full cover, featuring a closeup of the Terminator lit in contrasting cold and warm color.

I've been hunting for this for a while since it didn't show up anywhere for sale often, and the fact that I'm in US and the magazine is occasionally on the market only in UK made it harder to get.

Aesthetically, the magazine is great. The cover is simple but striking (and close to the interior design of the future Special Edition Box Set laserdisc), and the inside articles are nicely designed. It's got two T2 related articles. One is a two page spread on Arnold Schwarzenegger. And no, not the boring old biography that everyone knew for years, it was about the success Arnold had achieved in so many areas, and asks the question how long will he keep it up. James Cameron gives a couple of very complimentary quotes about Arnold for this one. And those two pages are very well designed, featuring the iconic half man half machine image, with Arnold's name in Terminator font and yellow color, which makes it stand out.

The other article is basically an overview and review of T2 by William Hall. He describes the plot and all the basics of the film, and gives his own review which at first I couldn't decipher if it's positive and negative, since it's written in what seems to be sort of a sarcastic style in places? Perhaps not ever being in UK makes it hard for me to figure out the tone of it, but seeing the great score given to the film at the end of the article confirms that the article is indeed praising the film. Performances got 8, Direction got 9, Script got 7, Production got 9 and  Entertainment Value got 9

Hall calls the T-1000 "the most astounding villain the screen has ever dreamed up in all its years of chasing the ultimate fantasy" and praises all of the performances.
