Some magazines were late to the party, but hey, better late than never huh? The Terminator premiered in United States in late October of 1984, and most of the press it attracted was published in late 1984. There are a few magazines that went into the mid 1985, and almost all of them simply dug deeper after the film became an instant classic - interviews with Jim Cameron, focus on the effects etc. However, few magazines, for some reason, were actually promoting the film's release in the mid 1985. How do I know they weren't simply promoting the upcoming VHS release? Well because they were written clearly before the film came out. I suppose they were there to promote the home video release but they were sure written before the film hit theaters and were drawing from the Press Kit.
One such magazine was Star Invaders, issue #2 from Spring of 1985. In the 70's and 80's there were many, many science fiction magazines. There were so many it would take few lines to list them all, most of them obscure and gone before 80's ended.
While my description may seem negative, it really isn't - very, very few articles focused on The Terminator actually presented information from the Press Kit, and lots of articles written at the time were erroneous, full of wrong facts and misinformation. Star Invaders presented a meaty article full of good info about the plot, actors, the effects and even production design, and included some pretty good, few relatively rare photos, as well as a great pinup of the Terminator from an early promo photo session.
The magazine, surprisingly, isn't very hard to find and isn't terribly expensive. Not really a fan of that last image since that makeup was never meant to be focused on, only seen in quick cuts in the movie, and it isn't representative of the actual finished look of the damaged Terminator in the film.
