When I decided to also add a laserdisc of The Terminator to my Terminator Collection, I knew I only wanted the original release. Not because of any audio or video related reasons, but for pure collectability. It's a time capsule and an item from a time when this film was brand new and started to gain even more steam with every year it has been out on video.
The most common The Terminator laserdisc is a reissue from 1995 released by Image Entertainment, and is very easy to find for a cheap price, but the original 1985 release published by HBO and Thorn Emi is certainly rare in comparison to the 90's disc. There usually is one circulating on eBay from time to time, but they usually sell quickly, although they aren't terribly expensive either
It's a pretty straightforward, nondescript release with the theatrical poster artwork on the cover and brief synopsis and three photos in the back. I like the last paragraph:
"The mechanical monster from the future leaves behind him an unspeakable path of destruction. Nothing can stop the horrific TERMINATOR!"
What I like about laserdiscs is that they are pretty much what vinyl is to Bluray or DVD - a great looking, very large collectible packaging of a movie with a vintage feel to it
