Vintage Collectibles: 1996 Terminator 2 Micro Machines Playset

Now this is just such a cool vintage collectible. Micro Machines were it in the 90's, and not only they made cool tracks and cars, but they also did phenomenal transforming sets for Star Wars. You had a character bust which opened to reveal multiple scenes recreated from the films. For example, you had a C3PO head that opened and had a tiny cantina set with a bar and the band, and the other half had Jabba's throne room with Jabba and his minions and a trap that led to Rancor who was also included.

Most of their sets were from the Star Wars original trilogy (they also did Special Edition scenes later on and Prequel and Sequel Trilogy), but in the 90's they also did some other cinematic scifi classics such as Alien, which was an Alien head that opened and had the Med Room with the table with Kane under x-ray, the Derelict set with the egg chamber, and the interior of the Narcissus with the hidden alien in the pipes. And all that in folding heads which are about 7 inches tall!

Fortunately, T2 came out in the early 90's, and being such record breaking hit and an instant classic and cultural icon it was, it was a great choice for a Micro Machines Transforming set which was licensed from Carolco and released in 1996.

As far as vintage toy collecting, this set, like any other Micro Machines set, has a high collectibility because they feel vintage but also recreate classic scenes from the films.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day set is naturally an endoskeleton bust, whose sculpt is a bit on a toy side, but that's its charm. Still though, despite the toy-ish look, it does have a great shine to it and as far as details it's quite accurate for a 90's toy set.

It opens to reveal a few setups from the climax of the film. It's so cool in person. It's a foundry set that has multiple levels. It has the entrance with the overturn Cryoco liquid nitrogen truck, it has catwalks and platforms on which Sarah and John climbed to escape the T-1000, it has a steel beam which the T-1000 bashed the T-800 with, and it's also a moving part in the set which you operate from the back. So cool

Also, it has a rotating working wheel which caught T-800 in the film, and also two molten steel pools on each side of the platforms, which rotate when pushed to allow a character that falls in to disappear into it.  Also, there's a hook and a crane arm which can lower the T-800 into the steel. How cool is that

The detail on those tiny figures is amazing, considering they're little over an inch tall. Even the truck is so faithful to the film

Terrific job on the set, always wanted to have one but the complete ones usually go for hundreds of dollars so I waited for a good deal which I found recently. One of the coolest 90's T2 collectibles out there
