Vintage Magazine Collection: Starburst Special #11, March 1992

UK's Starburst magazine released a special issue (11th) in March of 1992 which focused on FX characters, subtitled, perhaps not entirely appropriately, Monster Special. It features articles on Doctor Who, Star Trek, Jim Henson and none other than Stan Winston, or more specifically, his work on Terminator 2: Judgment Day

This spotlight on Stan Winston is very similar to what Fangoria did in the US, which is going over all the major effects briefly describing how they were done. The article looks nice because it has some really good photos in god quality, like the full page pic of the damaged T-800 bathed in the foundry light (an image used decades later for a BluRay cover of the FilmArena release), or a full page of the  T-800 about the slice his arm open. There's couple of nice shots in smaller format.

As far as the content, again, it's exactly what Fangoria did in the States, and if you've read it then, it's quite telling, but nowadays after numerous Making Ofs and books such as Winston Effect, the article brings little 'new'. They do touch upon the teaser trailer, which is a rarity and isn't even mentioned in the Winston book, unfortunately they switch the subject rather quickly without really dwelling into it or revealing more. Stan does say thought that the teaser was shot while Cameron was still polishing the script

Winston does mention little nuances that at least I didn't know about before, like that the stunt performer at Pescadero wearing the T-1000 splash head had to breath through a snorkel, or that the hardest effect of the entire film was the articulated arm of the T-800

Starburst is always a good read and after getting this mag it still didn't disappoint.
