Fangoria #105 from August 1991 gives us an interview with the brilliant Adam Greenberg, in an article form written by Marc Shapiro. Yes, the same Marc Shapiro who wrote the Starlog articles related to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and its Official Magazine. Fangoria was a subdivision of Starlog, hence the crossover.
Shapiro got Greenberg on the set, but unfortunately does not reveal which scene they were shooting that day. Greenberg talks about the small difference in lighting the first movie and T2: "We had worked together before, and it turned out that, because he chose me, he was going for a look that was close to that of the first Terminator (...) Jim wanted a much harder look to this film. The color requirements were very rigid: lots of heavy blues and warm colors showing up in the same scenes. This is a film with big contrasts (...) The mood has been a stylized mixture of hard light and shadow"
He explains that shadows were very important in the original, and that he also used steel blue on the Terminator. In T2 he explains, the light is more harsh, more contrasted, and of course, stylized. He's very proud of his work on it : "The stretching of the colors and tones, especially as they pertain to the effects shots, will be breathtaking. This will be a wonderful advertisement for Kodak"
Greenberg talks about his work on the other notable films he did, and says that working on T2 was like working on 4 films, so he is happy to take a break from big movies. A good article which actually brings something new despite the extensive American Cinematographer feature from previous month.
