I remember very clearly the shock I experienced when I found out that the 800 series 101 model will be a good guy this time around. Sure, I was very young but I just kept staring at a promotional still of Arnold on a bike for what it seemed like forever thinking "oh my god, he's a good guy now, he's really a good guy!". It was hard to believe that this nightmarish thing from another world that he was in the first movie was now an ally and a protagonist. I found out from a European pop culture magazine called Popcorn 1991, November issue, which had a lengthy two page spread on the upcoming T2. Mind you, as weird as it sounds, up until that point I had not seen Arnold Schwarzenegger in any other movie than in the first Terminator so I did not have any preconceived notions or a set image in my mind. He was only a Terminator to me until after I saw T2. Honestly I think I stared at this photo for at least 40 minutes and trying to both believe and imagine him as a good guy. I tried to process that idea. I found the idea absolutely fascinating and thrilling
Below the very image I saw, which as a kid I cut out from the magazine and saved and have to this day in a little T2 scrapbook I made as a youngster
And here's the T2 spread from the issue
The subtitle has been translated to three different ones in Poland, and in this case it's "TERMINATOR 2: DECIDING MATCH", and the tagline above it says "To the rescue of the dying humanity"
The most expensive movie of all time is breaking every record! None of the films produced for mass entertainment can match it. Thanks to the use of the newest computer animation technology and a gigantic financial backup, an important step towards the cinema of the future has been taken.
In the year 2029 an unapologetic war rages in America: automats and robots want to definitively defeat people, who manage to survive only thanks to strategic skills of their leader, John Conner [Yes, it's spelled as Conner here]. In order to eliminate the uncomfortable opponent, the automats send back in time an ultramodern robot T-1000 (Robert Patrick). His task is to travel in time to the year 1994 and murder the then-10 year old Conner (Edward Furlong). Upon these news, humans send a Terminator to the past (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who is suppose to protect the small John from the T-1000.
The first confrontation between the two cyborgs takes place in a shopping mall, where the Terminator saves the unsuspecting of the awaiting danger boy in the last minute, before the attack of the T-1000 (the chase scene on the bike is one of the most immersive scenes in the entire film). The stalker, T-1000, takes on the chase in a stolen tanker truck, which explodes on the highway [?]. The flames don't damage the robot in any way, who's made of liquid metals.
The Terminator knows that the T-1000 robot's next destination will be a hospital for neurotic patients, in which John's mother, Sarah (Linda Hamilton) resides - trapped there so her terrifying experiences with a Terminator won't see the light of the day (from the first part). The T-1000, who can turn into any person he wants, gets to the hospital before the Terminator however. The three heroes escape the trap with a big struggle. Sarah and the Terminator decide to get to the inventor, whose discoveries caused the dangerous for people evolution of robots. When Miles Dyson (Joe Morton) finds out about the horrible effects of his studies, it becomes clear to him that it's necessary to immediately destroy the laboratory. They manage to get through to the research center and set it on fire. The Terminator doesn't allow any of the rescue team's actions; he doesn't however, hurt anyone while doing that, because that's how he was programmed. Meanwhile the T-1000 in on their trail again. The Terminator knows that his opponent is a robot of the newest generation and he can't be a match for him in a direct duel, so he's trying to defeat him with tricks. The climax of the film is a deciding fight of the robots, which takes place in an unbelievable scenery...
That article and its photos did perfectly convey the nature of the T-1000 though, and this is the first image I saw of the T-1000 showcasing its liquid form
